Preparing for RCM Exams: Tips for Success

At Farnoosh Music Academy in Aurora, many of our students pursue Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) certification in both theory and performance. Whether your child is working toward Level 1 or Level 10, success starts with the right support system and structured practice habits.

Here are our top tips to help students prepare, stay motivated, and achieve their best results.

1. Understand the RCM Exam Structure

RCM exams are divided into two main areas:

  • Practical Exams (instrumental performance, ear training, sight reading)

  • Theory Exams (musical literacy, harmony, analysis, history)

At Farnoosh, we align our RCM theory classes in Aurora with the Celebrate Theory series and 2016 RCM syllabus, ensuring students are always exam-ready.

2. Create a Practice Schedule That Works

Consistency is more important than long, irregular practice sessions. We recommend:

  • 15–30 minutes of daily theory review

  • Focused instrumental practice with time for scales, repertoire, and technique

  • One mock exam per week in the 3 weeks leading up to your test

Our music instructors in Aurora help design custom study plans tailored to each student's level and timeline.

3. Use Official RCM Resources

RCM provides past exams, study guides, and sample ear training clips. These are essential for:

  • Familiarity with question formats

  • Reducing test anxiety

  • Practicing time management

We also supplement these tools with in-class quizzes and take-home assignments in our theory classes.

4. Build Confidence Through Performance

Mock performances and mini-recitals help students feel more comfortable performing under pressure. We integrate these into our piano and violin lessons as part of our RCM prep approach.

5. Balance Hard Work with Encouragement

Exams are important—but so is keeping music fun. We celebrate progress at every stage and remind students that exams are just milestones, not finish lines.

If you’re unsure whether your child is ready to begin RCM training, we offer assessments and free consultations to help you decide.
